The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an alpha-lipoic acid-loaded chitosan microsphere composition and a process for its preparation. The composition comprises substantially spherical microspheres having alpha-lipoic acid physically encapsulated within a glutaraldehyde-crosslinked chitosan matrix and possessing particle sizes in the range of 1 µm to 50 µm. The microspheres are prepared by emulsifying an aqueous phase containing chitosan and alpha-lipoic acid into a paraffin-based oil phase containing Span 80, followed by stepwise crosslinking with glutaraldehyde to form stable microspheres. The prepared microspheres exhibit smooth surface morphology and uniform dispersion of alpha-lipoic acid within the crosslinked polymer matrix without formation of a covalent reaction product between alpha-lipoic acid and chitosan. The process further includes separation, washing, and drying steps to obtain free-flowing microspheres. Spectroscopic analysis confirms successful encapsulation of alpha-lipoic acid while preserving its chemical integrity. The invention provides a stable and efficient carrier system for alpha-lipoic acid, offering enhanced encapsulation characteristics and suitability for controlled-release and pharmaceutical delivery applications.
