Abstract: An advanced colour-transforming expiry-indicating strip for real-time monitoring of pharmaceutical product stability is disclosed. The strip comprises anthocyanin extracted from red cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. rubra) immobilized within a biodegradable film-forming matrix to function as a natural pH-responsive colourimetric sensing system. The anthocyanin is extracted using an acidified ethanol medium, characterized for its optical properties, and incorporated into the polymeric matrix to produce a flexible indicator strip. Upon exposure to physicochemical changes associated with pharmaceutical degradation, including changes in pH, moisture, oxidation, or volatile degradation products, the strip exhibits a distinct and progressive visual colour transformation, enabling rapid, non-destructive, and instrument-free assessment of product stability. The indicator strip is suitable for integration with pharmaceutical packaging, including blister packs, bottles, vials, sachets, and cartons, without interfering with the packaged formulation. The invention provides a biodegradable, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable intelligent packaging system that enhances pharmaceutical quality assurance, supports continuous visual monitoring of product integrity throughout storage and distribution, and improves consumer safety by enabling timely identification of product deterioration.
