Abstract: The present invention relates to a turbulence-aware orbital angular momentum (OAM) communication system and method for mitigating self-interference in a turbulent RF channel. The system includes a transmitter for generating composite OAM signals, a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with controllable reflecting elements, and an RIS controller that adjusts phase shifts based on channel state information (CSI) feedback. Due to atmospheric turbulence causing mode leakage and conversion, receivers project the received signal onto a broader OAM basis to identify an energy-significant finite mode subspace and decode the intended OAM mode using turbulence-aware equalization. The invention enhances coherent signal combining, suppresses inter-mode interference, reduces decoding complexity, and improves communication performance in multi-user environments. Fig 1 to 9.
