MUMBAI, India, July 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611048952 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi on April 17, 2026, for “a Thermally Switchable Metasurface For Terahertz Regime”.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a thermally switchable metasurface (100) for terahertz regime comprising a unit cell (101) composed of a plurality of layers. The plurality of layers includes a first layer (1), a second layer (2) and a third layer (3). The first layer (1) that is a patterned meta-layer which includes a slotted square ring embedded within a central metallic ring and a slotted plus geometry. The second layer (2) that acts as a substrate which is sandwiched between the first layer (1) and a third layer (3). The third layer (3) that is made up of a phase-change material and configured to switch between a transmission state and an absorption state in response to a thermal excitation. The thermally switchable metasurface (100) achieves polarization insensitivity for the incident electromagnetic (EM) wave and maintains angular stability up to 60° for either state of polarization.
