Abstract: Described herein is a Seat-belt detection system for vehicles using a 3-point Seatbelt, comprising one or more infrared capable cameras, that can see light, in either both the visible and infrared spectrum, an image processing technique configured to identify and localize human occupants, a machine learning technique trained on a dataset comprising images of vehicle occupants in both seatbelt-fastened and seatbelt-unfastened states, captured across a range of lighting conditions to determine the presence or absence of a fastened seatbelt with respect to each detected occupant, both image processing and machine learning techniques being interfaced with vehicles onboard computer to selectively issue an alert in dependence upon the determined seatbelt state of each occupant.
