Abstract: The present invention relates to a magneto-hybrid supercapacitor device and a method for operating the same to enhance electrochemical performance. The device comprises a battery-type positive electrode including nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide supported on carbon nanotubes, a capacitive negative electrode comprising activated carbon, and an ion-conducting electrolyte disposed therebetween. A magnetic field source is configured to apply a controlled external magnetic field of up to 60 mT across the electrolyte and the positive electrode during charge-discharge operation. The positive electrode may exhibit an urchin-like nanostructure with high surface area and improved conductivity. The electrode further demonstrates soft ferromagnetic properties enabling magnetic interaction. During operation, the simultaneous application of electric and magnetic fields induces magnetohydrodynamic convection in the electrolyte. This enhances ion transport, reduces diffusion layer thickness, and improves interfacial charge transfer. The magnetic field may be oriented perpendicular to the electrolyte to maximize ion mobility. The field can be selectively applied or switched between zero-field and field-applied states during cycling. Such controlled application enables recovery of electrochemical activity and monitoring of degradation. The invention thereby improves capacitance, rate capability, and cycling stability.
