MUMBAI, India, June 30 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641074771 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology on June 17, 2026, for “a Hydrogel-Based Ai-Enabled Smart Air Filtration System”.

Inventors include Murugavelh Somasundaram; and Aushman Dutta.

The application for the patent was published on June 26, 2026, under issue no. 26/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a hydrogel-based AI-enabled smart air filtration system configured to improve indoor air quality through adaptive filtration and intelligent control. The system comprises a purifier housing having an air inlet and an air outlet, a variable-speed fan module, and a modular filtration cartridge including a humidity-responsive hydrogel filtration layer arranged with a particulate filtration layer. A sensor array is provided to measure particulate matter, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), differential pressure, temperature, and relative humidity. An embedded controller executes an AI-based control module configured to estimate filter condition and dynamically control fan operation based on real-time sensor data. The hydrogel filtration layer comprises a crosslinked polymer matrix capable of responding to humidity variations and may include conductive MXene nanosheets for impedance sensing and Joule-heating-based regeneration, as well as metal-organic framework nanoparticles for adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of VOCs. The system further enables self-regeneration of the filtration layer using electrical heating and/or ultraviolet irradiation. The invention also discloses a method of operation involving air filtration, real-time monitoring, AI-based control, and filter regeneration. The proposed system provides enhanced filtration efficiency, reduced energy consumption, and extended filter lifespan.
